Heating produced by therapeutic ultrasound in the presence of a metal plate in the femur of canine cadavers Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Andrades,A.O.; Mazzanti,A.; Beckmann,D.V.; Aiello,G.; Chaves,R.O.; Santos,R.P..
The present study aimed to assess the heat generated by a therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) in a metal bone plate and adjacent structures after fixation to the femur of canine cadavers. Ten pairs of hind limbs were used, and they were equally distributed between groups that were subjected to 1- and 3-MHz frequencies, with each frequency testing 1- and 2-W/cm² intensities. The right hind limb was defined as the control group (absence of the metal plate), and the left hind limb was the test group (presence of the metal plate). Therefore, the control groups (CG) were denominated CGI, using TUS with 1-MHz frequency and 1-W/cm² intensity; CGII, using 1-MHz frequency and 2-W/cm² intensity; CGIII, using 3-MHz frequency and 1-W/cm² intensity; and CGIV, using 3-MHz...

do Carmo,Edna Maria; Miyaoka,Tatiana Midori; da Silva,Natália Denipoti; de Camargo,Marcela Regina; Rocha,Ana Paula Rodrigues; Pelai,Eliza Bizetti; Figueira,Jéssica Ibde Jaquiel; Fregonesi,Cristina Elena Prado Teles; Sato,José Takaiti; de Machado,Roberto Gameiro; de Souza,Wilson Machado.
The current study aimed to analyze the histochemical and morphological characteristics of the levator ani muscle in rats. For this, we used 10 Wistar rats (5 males and 5 females), weighing between 200 and 765g. The animals were dissected fresh and in formalin for the levator ani muscle anatomical observation. Muscle fragments were collected and frozen in n-Hexane previously cooled in liquid nitrogen. Then, the muscles were transferred to a microtome cryostat (HM 505 E Microm), being fixed in metal mounts with the adhesive Tissue Freezing Medium. Histological sections of 6.0µm were removed and subjected to HE staining. Other sections were subjected to NADH-TR and SDH reactions. After being dissected and fixed, the architecture of the female pelvic floor...

Patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies are not more asymmetrical than healthy controls on timed performance of upper limb tasks BJMBR
Artilheiro,M.C.; Sá,C.S.C.; Fávero,F.M.; Caromano,F.A.; Voos,M.C..
This study aimed to investigate possible asymmetries and relationships between performance of dominant and non-dominant upper limbs (UL) in patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DMD/BMD), to compare UL performance of patients and healthy subjects and to investigate the relationship between timed performance of UL and age, motor function and muscle strength in DMD/BMD patients. Sixteen patients with DMD and 3 with BMD were evaluated with Jebsen-Taylor Test (timed performance), Vignos scale and Dimension 3 of Motor Function Measure (motor function), and Medical Research Council scale (muscle strength) on a single session. ANOVA showed no asymmetry between dominant and non-dominant UL, except in the writing subtest, in patients and in...

Rat hindlimb joint immobilization with acrylic resin orthoses BJMBR
da Silva,C.A.; Guirro,R.R.J.; Polacow,M.L.O.; Cancelliero,K.M.; Durigan,J.L.Q..
The objective of the present study was to propose an orthosis of light material that would be functional for the animal and that would maintain only the ankle joint immobilized. Male Wistar rats (3 to 4 months old, 250-300 g) were divided into 2 groups (N = 6): control and immobilized for 7 days. Rats were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg weight) and the left hindlimb was immobilized with the orthoses composed of acrylic resin model, abdominal belt and lateral supports. The following analyses were performed: glycogen content of the soleus, extensor digitorum longus, white gastrocnemius, red gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscles by the phenol sulfuric method, and the weight, fiber area and intramuscular connective tissue of the soleus...

Rotator cuff Disease: Aspects and Implications International Journal of Morphology
Schadeck de Almeida,Josiane; Carvalho Filho,Guaracy; Marino Lamari,Neuseli.
The objetive this study was analyze the characteristics of the rotator cuff disease carrying and its implications by the lesion evolutional stage. 112 patients with initial diagnosis of rotator cuff disease were interviewed, most of them women, average age of 51 years, right side more injured, with evidence to be the most damaged (p=0,00) and with a lot incapacity to move the upper limbs (p<0,05). The most found pathology stage was the partial rupture of supraspinatus tendon, 26,16 months of attendance and without association with pathology stages. Most of patients were treated with physiotherapy and just 19% of them were submitted to the surgery procedure. It has shown that this pathology implies in lots functional damages, affects social and work...

Tai Chi versus routine exercise in patients with early- or mild-stage Parkinson's disease: a retrospective cohort analysis BJMBR
Li,Quanhao; Liu,Jinmei; Dai,Fei; Dai,Fengling.
Parkinson's disease cannot be cured but symptoms can be improved by making use of physical therapy. The objective of the study was to compare the effect of routine exercises and Tai Chi on physical and clinical performance in elderly people suffering from Parkinson's disease. Data from interviews, physical and clinical performance, and levodopa consumption of 500 patients with confirmed Parkinson's disease (severity level I to III) were collected and analyzed. Participants who received 80 min/day Tai Chi 3 times/week for 2 months were included in the Tai Chi (TC) group (n=250) and those who received 90 min/day routine exercise 3 times/week for 2 months were included in routine exercise (RE) group (n=250). Timed up-and-go, 50-foot speed walk, and functional...
